Drifting Courtyards
Drifting Courtyards House is a custom residential home designed to blend seamlessly into its natural landscape. Porter & Erb Architects designed this contemporary brick residence which explores the relationship between architecture, light, and site through a series of interconnected indoor–outdoor courtyards. Constructed from hand-laid brick sourced regionally, the home reflects the tones and textures of the surrounding terrain, echoing nearby stone formations and the existing cottage on the property. The material palette grounds the architecture within its environment while providing durability and warmth.
The design is organized as a sequence of “drifting courtyards” that weave through the plan, dissolving boundaries between interior living spaces and the outdoors. Each courtyard captures natural light, cross-ventilation, and framed views of the falls, while also creating intimate garden rooms protected within masonry walls. Sliding glass openings allow the kitchen, living areas, and circulation spaces to expand outward into shaded patios and planted courts during warmer months. In cooler seasons, integrated fireplaces located at the thresholds extend warmth and visual connection to the landscape, allowing outdoor spaces to remain usable year-round.
This project demonstrates our approach to site-specific residential architecture — creating homes that respond to climate, views, materials, and the daily rituals of living.
